Harvesting Cannabis: Harvest Special Pt. 1

Harvesting Cannabis: Harvest Special Pt. 1

It’s that time. The time all growers anticipate. Harvest season is here, and it’s time to get ready! The Real Dirt knows all too well what goes into a successful harvest, and when it comes to harvesting cannabis, The Real Dirt knows best.

Chip has personally helped hundreds of growers across the country manage their grows and harvests, and he’s the go to source for any grower serious about harvesting cannabis. You might still be in the tail-end of flower, but it’s never too early to get prepared for harvest.

Harvesting cannabis

If you aren’t prepared when the time to harvest comes around, you’re going to be in trouble. Using the same gunked up scissors from last harvest is a rookie mistake, but one that even an experienced grower may forget. After all, when you’re in the garden twelve hours a day, there isn’t much time to run to the store.

Because of this, many growers who have large quantities, especially commercial growers, will enlist the help of for-hire trimmers. This can be very helpful, but only if you vet your candidates well.

Trim migration

In places like Northern California where millions of pounds of cannabis are grown, hiring trimmers is a necessity. However, the population in Northern California is pretty small, so most of the trimmers are outsourced.

The great migration of trimmers starts at the beginning of harvest season, as thousands of people migrate to these areas to look for trim jobs. While there may be plenty of applicants, they aren’t all going to do good work.

You’ll get the lazy stoners that just want to get baked and work slow, other will try to steal your cannabis on the side, and more. That’s why it is so important to know your trimmers, and keep an eye on them.

Chip has seen them all, and in the first episode of The Real Dirt Harvest Specials, he talks trim tips, and the business of trimming. Hear the full episode here, or listen on iTunes, Spotify and Stitcher.

Humboldt Cannabis in a Crunch

Humboldt Cannabis in a Crunch

Humboldt is known for pumping out some of the best cannabis, feminized seeds and other cannabis products in the world, and has been known in that way since cannabis first started spreading across the country. The fertile lands, the perfect climate, and the farmers who are committed to the plant make Humboldt a unique place in and of itself.

New laws and regulations from the legal industry now may bring a hinderance to this mass-production area. From to licensing limits to outrageous fines for those who don’t comply, the state is not taking it easy on Humboldt county and the rest of the Emerald Triangle.

Humboldt cannabis farms in trouble

There a currently thousands of private market farms in the Emerald Triangle trying to figure out their next move. With barely more than 600 licenses up for grabs, it’s become a competition of luck and money to see who can get regulated in the legal market in time. As all the new legal regulations for California took effect in July, those who are not on top of this are already in trouble.

Those who haven’t gotten licenses or shut down their operations after 30 days of notice can be fined heavily — upwards of $30,000 — just for the initial fine. Those who continue to avoid regulations will be fined additionally for each day after the original 30 days that they do not comply. Suffice to say, a lot of people are going to lose a lot of money.

Humboldt cannabis growers have a long battle ahead of them. Those that do not agree with the new laws can fight it as long as they can, most likely going broke in the process. Those who got a head start already have their licenses, and these farmers are poised to flood the legal market with legal Humboldt cannabis soon enough.

Get on board or get out?

A lot of private Humboldt cannabis farmers will be forced out of the legal market simply due to the high costs. Local, craft farmers won’t be able to front the massive fees to get regulated before getting hit with more fines. This has some worried that only those with the most money will move on, making the legal industry in California pay-to-play.

This is already opening the door for larger companies to come in and buy up land and licenses before smaller businesses get the chance. This power-grab from big players could have negative consequences, most notably a commercialized market with a focus on profit instead of producing a healthful and safe product for the consumer.

Chip lived in Humboldt for years, and has steadily watched and studied the evolving industry in the state of California. Hear what Chip thinks about the current state of things in Humboldt and California on this week’s episode of The Real Dirt!

CSI Humboldt: Breeding top shelf feminized seeds

CSI Humboldt: Breeding top shelf feminized seeds

CSI Humboldt is known for breeding some of the most elite feminized seeds and strains in the world. But Caleb the Nspecta, the founder of CSI Humboldt and Pirates of the Emerald Triangle, wasn’t always a legendary breeder.

Caleb was at a turning point in his life. He had seen some success as a graphic artist, working for the likes of D.C. and Marvel comics. But he was also growing his own cannabis on the side and started to build his feminized seeds repertoire. He was passionate about both, but realized he had to choose one to pursue full time.

It didn’t take him long after that to establish CSI Humboldt. A third generation Humboldt grower, Caleb’s family was well-known for their cultivation abilities and the quality of their cannabis. Add to that Caleb being one of the first growers to breed and pursue feminized seeds.

Today, CSI is one of the most well known seed banks in the world, with a massive following and growing seed inventory. Hear Caleb’s story, the story of CSI and more on this episode of The Real Dirt with Chip Baker!

60 Nuggets Explained: how to know your cannabis

60 Nuggets Explained: how to know your cannabis

In this episode of The Real Dirt Chip talks about the Cultivate Showdown, a secret cannabis competition hosted by The Real Dirt. The best of the best growers from all over came to showcase their cannabis, with only one winner being chosen.

Check out the entries below as Chip and his guests analyze them on this episode!

You walk into the dispensary. There are a dozen different strains on the shelf, some are labeled as the “bottom shelf” strain choices, others are the supposed “top shelf” strain options.

You ask to see one of the bottom shelf strains — because let’s be real, if you can get solid cannabis at a cheap price, why not? — and they bring the jar closer for inspection. The bud might not look super frosty or appealing, but when they open the jar, you’re hit with a wave of smells that linger in your nose. Fruitiness, gassiness, dankness. All the smells you want.

Then you ask to see one of the top shelf strain options. It looks great; the bud structure is what you look for, it has a nice crystal to hair ratio. It’s everything you would look for in a top shelf bud. The keyword being “look”.

The budtender brings the top shelf jar over and cracks it open. You aren’t smacked in the face with the same smell explosion as before. In fact, this strain seems to be very mild in smell compared to the bottom shelf option. It might even smell a little bit like hay. This is where the average cannabis consumer gets lost.

The top shelf bud should be better. It looks way better, but most importantly, there has to be a reason it is priced higher than the bottom shelf stuff, right? Not always. One of the most important things to remember about cannabis, especially when it comes to dispensary cannabis, is that looks are not all that matters.

Dispensaries do not allow customers to touch the cannabis. Obviously this is due to contamination concerns, but an added benefit of this rule is just that; you aren’t allowed to touch the cannabis. An essential way of being able to judge the quality of cannabis is through touch.

A bud could look super dense and sticky in the jar, but once you get home you find out it was just a fluffy bud that looked dense, and it’s dry to the point you don’t even need a grinder. Since it’s unlikely that you’ll ever be able to touch the cannabis at a dispensary, you must utilize your other senses, sight and smell, for the majority of your judgement. So you better make sure they are fine tuned!

In this episode of The Real Dirt, Chip sits down with Jess Baker, Jacob Sarabia and Travis Crane to go through a dozen different strains to analyze them all. Learn what to look for, what to smell for, and what to avoid before you decide to light up that next strain you see at the dispensary or in your smoke circle.
